I'm a Buddhist too, and what I was taught is that this self-torment is called "seeing monsters." After we die we see lots of monsters, and where we go from there depends on how we react to the scary monsters of our consciousness. Of course in Buddhism there is heaven and hell, and we can go from one to another, and back. There is no "final salvation" nor eternal damnation, but an endless cycle. that’s pretty insightful, Marie.
